While both positions draw on the same body of knowledge, they require different skills. I appreciated my time on the bench, but I am enjoying being a trial attorney again. I like the challenge of digging into a case on my client's behalf to look for the strengths and weaknesses, and I have the advantage of understanding how the State is likely assessing the case and what concerns the Judge might have. I like crafting the legal strategy that will best meet my client's need, and when it is needed, I love being in front of a jury.
What I most enjoy about being a defense attorney is working with the client and his or her family. I had a young client make a hard decision this morning after much discussion and consideration. For almost a year, I had been working with him and his family to reach the best possible resolution. "Best possible resolution" is going to mean something different for each client with each case, but it is my privilege to work to make that happen.
Outside of the courthouse, my husband Jim and I are proud parents of two very busy high schoolers and spend many hours each week chauffeuring the kids to their events and activities. I've volunteered for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Speakers Committee since 2013, and I am a Board Member for the Harris County Criminal Lawyer's Association. During COVID lockdown, I started doing a lot of gardening and enjoy keeping everything green.
